What Is an Eco-Welfare State -seminar – 21 January 2020

In the coming decade, societies need to adjust human activities within environmental limits while ensuring that the policies introduced are societally legitimate and fair. Welfare states such as Finland need to transform into eco-welfare states.

So far, not a single country has achieved a high level of well-being in an ecologically sustainable way. The current and emergent policy tools, governance models and prior research are fragmented and insufficient for reaching this goal.

This event brings together leading Finnish and international scholars and practitioners to discuss the topic:

  • How to approach transformations towards eco-welfare states?
  • What kind of research knowledge and practical mechanisms would help public authorities to effectively steer and facilitate the systemic change needed?
  • How to define and picture an eco-welfare state?

The invited speakers include professor Liisa Häikiö (University of Tampere), professor Eeva Furman (Finnish Environment Institute) and adjunct professor/research director (University of Helsinki/STN).

  • Time: 21 January 2020 at 15:00 – 18:00
  • Venue: Kaisa House, Kaisa Room (7th floor, room #7062), Fabianinkatu 30, Helsinki
